The Utah Primate Freedom Project is a student group at the University of Utah that was established in October, 2003. We are a collection of concerned University students, alumni, and laypersons who offer education and advocacy on behalf of primates held in laboratories. In short, we support what is called the "Zero Option" campaign, started by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection. Primates are self-aware, emotionally sensitive, socially complex individuals with minds of their own. In light of the extreme moral problems posed by experimenting on such individuals, we demand that primates be alotted basic rights to be free of intentional harm. We believe that, like humans, nonhuman primates should never even be considered an option when considering conducting invasive experimentation. Locally, the Utah Primate Freedom Project has one simple and direct purpose: to seek an end to all primate experimentation at the University of Utah campus.
