Many people email us confused or mistaken about what our program is all about. Many people come here looking for a horse that they can breed, along with many other questions about our program. We would like to let everyone know why we are here and what we are all about.
M.H.W.F. Inc. is a charity and non-profit organization dedicated to finding homes for horses who would otherwise have a hard time finding a good home. That is our only purpose. We are not horse dealers or traders and are not a market for backyard breeders. Everyone involved in our program is a volunteer and 100% of all donations and adoption fees go back into the care of another needy horse.
The horses that come to us come for many reasons and each horse has it's own story. They all have one thing in common, they need a loving and caring home. Our rules and policies are the accumulation of years of experience and planning. We are looking for good people with big hearts willing to share their lives with a horse who needs their help. For the folks who understand this, we greatly appreciate the help and support you have shown. If you are new to MHWF, then please read our Placement Agreement which is contained in our Application

We pick up stray or lost cats and dogs and give them a safe comfortable place to stay and care for them until their owners can recover them. Sometimes there is no one who calls to find these pets and we need to find new adoption families for them. We are very limited on the time alloted for us to care for these animals, the county who has contracted us will only provide funds for seven days, after that we keep these pets at our own expense. We want to place as many pets in good homes that we can.

Founded in 1969, the Humane Society of Portage County owns and operates an animal shelter in Bukolt Park, located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The shelter provides food, housing and care for over 2,500 stray, unwanted, sick, or injured animals each year.
HSPC is primarily funded through private donations, fundraising activities and adoptions. Outreach for HSPC is based on our foster and volunteer programs. Many nursing mothers are sent into foster care until their kittens or puppies are ready to be adopted. We also use this program for undersocialized animals and old/sickly dogs and cats that would otherwise not find homes. Our volunteers help with the daily chores and activities that keep our animals happy and healthy. Many volunteers walk the dogs and socialize our cats. They also help with general training. We could not run as smoothly without these wonderful people.

Our dogs live with us as family members; we know them well and can tell you what type of household would be best for them. They come to us from shelters and pounds that are full and desperately need an alternative to euthanizing for space. We try to help whenever we can by providing a safe place for these dogs until they are adopted. Some of our dogs come to us directly from owners who have had an unfortunate change in their lives and can no longer keep a beloved pet. When owners surrender an animal to us, we ask for a donation of dog food, a crate, or a monetary donation to help pay for dog food, vaccines, and other supplies we use on a daily basis
