Catawba County Animal Care ControlThe current Catawba County Animal Shelter was completed in 1985 and constructed at a cost of nearly $300,000. It is a totally enclosed facility, meaning no animal sheltered is being exposed to the weather. The Animal Shelter was designed with automatic feeding and watering dispenser, separate quarters for male and female dogs, and an area specifically for cats. Humane Society of WilkesThe Humane Society of Wilkes is a volunteer organization. We are dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and the education of the public regarding humane treatment of animals. We support these goals through our member dues, tax-deductible donations, and fund-raising projects such as our annual Best Friends Calendar and booths at the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. With these funds we have been able to: place billboards around the county encouraging spaying and neutering of pets, provide Kind News subscriptions to all kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms in Wilkes County, and work closely with Wilkes County Animal Control to place pets from their shelter into appropriate homes. Animal Trustees of Alleghany Inc.Animal Trustees of Alleghany, Inc.'s main purpose is to provide good homes, to responsible pet owners, for the animals brought into the Alleghany Animal Shelter in Twin Oaks, Sparta, N.C., and to encourage spay/neutering of these pets and the pets in the county. We provide care of the sick and injured animals, vaccinations, worming, food, disinfectants, litter, cages, and issue a $35.00-spay/neuter certificate for each animal adopted. Financial assistance is offered to those that cannot afford to spay /neuter their pets in the county. We work with other animal welfare groups that adopt particular breeds by spay/neutering, vaccinating, and transferring the pets to these groups. Pictures are taken of the pets, posters made and circulated throughout this and other counties to facilitate the adoptions. Radio coverage also describes the pets available at the shelter. Educational material is circulated to encourage people to spay/neuter their pets in order to stop the amount of animals brought into the shelter that are euthanized. Alexander County Animal ControlThe Alexander County Animal Control Department is responsible for enforcing all State and County laws, ordinances, and resolutions relating to the care, custody, and control of domesticated dogs and cats. The responsibilities also include the enforcement of the laws of the State with regard to animals and especially with regard to vaccination of animals against rabies and the confinement or controlling of dangerous animals and dogs and investigating violations and complaints. Animal Control also investigates animal bites and cruelty or abuse cases in regard to all animals, canvasses Alexander County for the purpose of ascertaining that all animals are vaccinated against rabies as required by local ordinance and State statute.
