For the Love of PetsWe are a small group of animal lovers in Southern Ohio. Unfortunately, we can't afford to pay to file for non-profit 501(c)3 status at this time and receive no government grants or charity donations (we pay for the animal care out of our paychecks). We rescue dogs from local dog pounds who are on death row through no fault of their own and we will also pick up stray pets running along the busy roads and search for their owners (usually, no owner is ever found). We have these pets fully vetted and spayed/neutered. I decided on a whim to start ForCHINate Chins in January of 2003 because of a post I saw on the Freecycle website. The post stated: Offer: Chinchilla with cage, so I got excited and opened it, I thought my boys would love a new friend! When I opened the email, it read, I am sick of taking care of it! I replied to the man via email, and waited for a response. That afternoon he called me on my cell phone and told me that he had already given the chin away to the first response. I asked if they knew anything about chins, and he said he didn't care, and that he just wanted the thing out of his house. I was heartbroken for the chin, as this could mean his death if the new owner didn't do any research about chins, so I thought that if I couldn't help that chin, that I could help others!! Ford County Humane SocietyThe Ford County Humane Society was started in 1993 by a group of concerned individuals to improve conditions at our local animal shelter. We continue to be a group of all volunteers who foster animals, work at the weekly Adopt-A-Pet and do education and fund raising activities. There is a membership of about 150 single or family members. Currently the Humane Society does not have a facility of it's own. We board our animals, place them in foster homes or show them for their owners while they continue to live at home. The Humane Society and it's foster homes are licensed by the State of Kansas Animal Health Department.
