Since its founding in 1998, the Humane Society of Pocahontas County has been instrumental in spaying and neutering hundreds of pets and strays and arranging adoptions of many animals. Our rescue efforts have saved starving horses, lost and abused animals and most recently helped to shut down a cat breeding operation which was out of control. Although Pocahontas County has no official shelter, we support the efforts of our Humane Officer, and are committed to a future where unwanted animals in the county will be cared for in a modern facility.

OUR STORY : We are a NEW home and foster based shelter in Boone County West Virginia. We've been working to save the lives of a few homeless dogs and cats since July of 2004 ( check out our happy tails- we're proud of them!) As far as we know, we are the ONLY animal rescue of any sort in our county ! Boone County has an EPIDEMIC problem with homeless animals. Everywhere you look are homeless animals. It's very common here to find strays on the roadside left for coyotes to eat, the weather to kill, starvation, or maybe if they were lucky, some coal miner on his way to work to catch one for his kids ( I'm sure thats what the dumper hopes will happen), thats if they aren't so scared they run from him! Everyone I speak with knows of another place where animals are dumped. OR THEY have an animal they would like me to take. Unfortunately I have little space, and currently no foster homes. Our county pound is a clean, well maintained shelter, but is not No Kill, as we grow we are hoping we can pull more animals from the pound and find them new homes

The shelter is frequently overcrowded with pets who desperately need your help. Please consider adopting one of our dogs, cats, puppies, or kittens. If you cannot adopt, please help by spreading the word. Also remember the importance of spaying/neutering to help control pet overpopulation. As our organization is not affiliated with the Putnam County Humane Society (they are a separate organization), we are constantly in need of donations (i.e. cash donations, dog/cat food, newspapers, blankets, kitty litter, bleach, lysol, etc.). If you are looking for a special type or breed of animal, please call our shelter at 586-0249.

Our mission is to promote humane treatment to all animals; to prevent cruelty to animals by investigating and resolving all complaints made by the public. We strive to adopt animals to forever loving homes; reunite animals to their rightful owners and inform the public about the lifelong commitment needed for our four legged companions. The Jackson County Animal Shelter will also provide a sanctuary for the unwanted, lost, orphaned and neglected. We will make every effort to educate the public about pet over-population and the importance of spaying and neutering their animals.
