Jefferson County Animal ControlJefferson County Animal Shelter is a kill shelter located in the tip of the Eastern Panhandle of WV, near Harper's Ferry and Charles Town. The shelter had a very high kill rate until June of 2006, when they started working with a volunteer to move as many adoptable dogs as possible into rescue. From June 2006 through December 2006, more than 100 dogs were adopted or taken into rescue. Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson CountyThe Animal Welfare Society was formed to provide care and protection for suffering homeless and unwanted animals; to educate the public in respect to humane treatment of animals and to encourage and assist in the enforcement of laws against mistreatment of and cruelty to animals. Among the projects undertaken by AWS was a spay/neuter and adoption program in cooperation with Friends of Animals, Inc. and local veterinarians; cooperative efforts with the county on a rabies prevention program; and a project designed to increase knowledge of county children in proper pet care. Mineral County Humane Society, Inc.The Mineral County Humane Society is a small group of local animal lovers working to assist our 4 legged friends who cannot help themselves. Some of our most recent projects have included donating materials to have dog houses built and distributed to those in need. Offering to assist with funding for having pets spayed/neutered. Working with shelters to help find permanent homes for unwanted pets, as well as a list of other activities. These things are all made possible by those donating time to the projects as well as the generous monetary donations of members and individuals in the community. Preston County (WV) Animal ShelterThe Preston County Animal Shelter is a municipal animal control facility located in Kingwood, in northcentral West Virginia. We are the only animal control facility in a large, rural county. Space is limited and intake is high, so pets often do not remain very long. We are not a no-kill shelter, and our adoption rate is approximately 40%, with puppies and toy breed adult dogs having the highest adoption rate, adult dogs over 15 lbs., cats, and kittens having the lowest. North Mountain Small Dog RescueNORTH MOUNTAIN SMALL DOG RESCUE is a small breed rescue geared toward but not limited to Pomeranians. Our objective is to rescue and place small breed dogs in need. Located in the Eastern Panhandle of WV, we are very accessible to the Rte 81 corridor as well as Washington DC and Baltimore.. Working independently, there is no building, fostering in private homes. We rescue from many different shelters--and frequently bring animals into our group who might otherwise lose their lives. Safe Haven Dog RescueSafe Haven Dog Rescue is an all breed dog rescue that will show dogs available for adoption by appointment. only, as the rescue does not have a facility,, as the dogs live in foster families homes. The rescue is located outside of Martinsburg, WV, 1/2 hr south of Hagerstown, MD or 1/2 hr north of Winchester, VA, just off of I-81. Safe Haven Dog Rescue takes in neglected, abandoned and "just because they don't want me anymore" dogs and pups and is no -kill.. All rescued dogs are neutered or spayed, current on all shots, tested for lyme and heartworm disease and will have a current 1 year rabies certificate and tag. An adopted dog is wormed and groomed before going to his/her new home.. They all have had some training.
