NHS was authorized as a non-profit organization in 1987. Our shelter was opened in Oct. of 1996 on an 87 acre site. It is surrounded by beautiful rolling fields that change with the seasons, making our volunteer mowed walking trails a never-ending source of pleasure. We have 16 dog runs and 30 cat runs. The building also includes an office, receiving area, visitation room, cat and dog isolation areas, indoor and outdoor play areas for cats, three outdoor exercise runs and a 100 x 100 fenced play yard for dogs. Other areas include laundry & grooming, kitchen and storage rooms.
The following page has a brief history of Northwoods Humane Society and how we got to the point we are at today. It's been a long road but a very rewarding one and hopefully we can offer some inspirations and ideas for other groups who may be just getting started.

While our rescue group does usually have a few dogs available for adoption, our main goal is to provide assistance to folks needing help in finding the right dog to adopt. The rescue world is virtually inaccessible to potential adopters who don't have access to a computer and/or are not computer savvy. Even for those who do find their way to Petfinder, dealing with rescues and various shelters can be very confusing and intimidating.

OBAH began September 2005 after Hurricane Kartina devastated the gulf coast. Our founder, Caryn Majeskie, realized that there was a desperate need for people to get into the areas for search and rescue as well as feeding and watering the animals on the streets. Once the news broke, local news stations and newspapers took ahold of the story and the operation took off. Our goals and dreams are to continue our work as a search and rescue team and have a facility that will represent a home where we can house the animals until permanent families are found.
