Founded in 1911, the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc. is dedicated to helping people and pets increase their quality of life. We operate two shelters, one on the East Shore and one on the West Shore of the Susquehanna River. Together, the two facilities service Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, and northwestern York Counties of Pennsylvania. Most of the animals received each year at our two locations are cats and dogs; however, the Humane Society accepts and cares for all types of animals, contacting third party agencies for assistance when necessary.

What we do: Our program to educate the public on responsible owership includes guidelines on choosing a rabbit, understanding the care it will require and proper housing as an indoor pet. We supply at no charge, rabbit care packets to shelters, veterinarians, and pet stores for their clients. We also provide information by phone, newsletters, seminars, school programs and community events as a way to bring awareness to our presence in the community and existing rabbit owners, as well as to anyone deciding if a rabbit is the right pet for them.

A Wet Nose Dog Rescue (AWNDR) is very small rescue located in south central PA. We are a short distance from Hagerstown MD (approx. 12 miles) and 8 miles east of I-81. We are dedicated to all dogs but primarily german shepherd dogs. We concentrate on moving dogs from high kill shelters to foster homes and then to their forever homes. We have alot of experience with the shepherd breed and want to help these dogs who have been the victim of unwilling or unable owners or those dogs found as strays. All of these dogs will be temperment tested and placed accordingly. We are a not for profit rescue and are waiting for the approval of our 501c3.If you do not see what you are looking for let me know and I will see if I can find something to meet your needs.

The Adams County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a private, non-profit, 501 (c)(3) charitable organization that serves Adams County and functions under a governing board elected by the membership. Its purposes are to provide effective means of preventing abuse of animals, to assist in the enforcement of public laws enacted for the protection of animals, and to house and find homes for stray and unwanted animals. We operate the only Animal Shelter that accepts animals from all Adams County municipalities. At our Shelter, stray, abandoned, injured or unwanted animals are cared for and made available for adoption. In addition to operating the Animal Shelter we also employ a humane officer to assist in the enforcement of Pennsylvania's anti-cruelty laws. We participate in a radio-broadcast "lost and found" pets service. As a public service, we provide low-cost rabies clinics twice a year, we regularly take pets on visits to area nursing homes to provide special recreation for the residents, and we provide educational presentations for youth organizations on resposible care of animals. We also maintain a pet cemetery where owners may purchase burial plots for their pets. The SPCA receives no federal funding and little state funding. Most of the money to operate the Animal Shelter and to provide its other services must be raised locally through adoption fees, annual membership dues, tax-deductible donations, memorial gifts and bequests, voluntary contributions from municipalities and the county, and through fundraising projects like the annual Loyalty Walk and "$100-A-Day" Raffle.
