Greater Chicago Ferret Association Shelter

The GCFA is a Non-Profit organization with both a Ferret Shelter & Club. We are the Oldest and Largest Ferret Association in the Greater Chicago Area! In trying to come up with a mission statement that would reflect what G.C.F.A. is all about, and how the volunteer's that help us feel about what they do. I chose this short story that was written by someone who wishes to remain anonymous. An old man was walking along a beach after a particularly high and violent tide had receded, leaving thousands of starfish stranded above the waterline to die. Ahead of him he saw a youth, bending down and then standing to fling something into the waves. Coming closer, he saw the youth was tossing starfish back into the ocean where they had a chance. "Why bother?" the old man told the youth. "There are thousands here. You can't toss them all back before they die. You can't even toss a small fraction of them back in time. What you're doing doesn't matter." The youth pondered that a moment, looking at the starfish he held in his hand. "It matters to this one," he replied, and threw it back into the water. This is all that anyone can ask and/or do. If you can, help us save one more!!!

Grundy County Humane Society/DANE911

Are you interested in adopting a "rescued" Great Dane or in knowing more information about them? Here's a summary of what we do and a phone number to call... We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are contacted by humane societies, animal control facilities, and individuals interested in placing Danes of assorted ages into new homes. We arrange to see the dogs to help check temperatment, and we take them to a veterinary facility for fecal and heartworm checks, shots, spay or neuters, and micro chipping before placing them into new homes. We do not provide dogs for breeding purposes. We interview interested families over the phone to fill out information sheets about their circumstances with housing, children, other pets, amount of yard, exercise, or walking which can be provided. This enables us to attempt to place the dog, as it becomes available, not by the order in which you enroll with us, but by the best "fit" for the dog. Expect to pay approximately $600.00 for a rescued Dane. We hold this donation a week until we see that the dog is fitting in with its new family. Then the donation is used to fund the medical expenses for the next dog. We are happy to talk about medical, feed, or other problems you may have with your adopted Dane, and we ask you to sign a contract agreeing to alert us in future if you have questions or problems with your dog. We provide information on gastric torsion and bloat in large dog breeds and discuss and require that you are prepared to keep the dog on heartworm preventative monthly as treating heartworm is expensive, time consuming, and very stressful for dogs and owners. We do not breed or sell puppies. We will be happy to try to put you in conact with reputable breeders who x-ray for genetic problems, use spay and neuter contracts on pet quality dogs, and who are "responsible" for helping readopt their own dogs that must be returned for some reason. We are looking for Great Homes for Great Danes. Do you qualify?

Hancock County Pound

I have been rescuing dogs/puppies from my county's pound for over 4 years now and although I work with the county warden, I do this strictly on a volunteer basis. I have no say in the policies of this facility. I have always loved animals and this is my way to make a difference in the lives of these animals. This pound has been around for a very long time and 4 years ago they made additions and shelter improvements. The county is responsible for housing the dogs/puppies for 7 days. They do not except cats. They can be reclaimed at any point during that time frame. After that they are to be euthanized. There is no set hours nor staff on duty. Cleaning and feeding is done but no adoption hours or open to the public. The pound is located around 2 hours north of St. Louis, 2 hours west of Peoria, 2 hours south of the Quad Cities, and 2 hours south east of Iowa City IA. Carthage is in west central IL on the Mississippi River boardering IA and Mo.

Homeward Bound Pet Shelter

The mission of Homeward Bound Pet Shelter is to shelter and rehabilitate relinquished cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies until they can be permanently adopted into loving homes. Homeward Bound has operated as a no-kill, not-for profit organization since April 2002. On July 1, 2005, Homeward Bound became a division of Macon Resources, Inc. Macon Resources, Inc. is a not for profit agency that provides comprehensive services and supports which promote growth, independence, and self-worth for children and adults with disabilities and their families. This unique social partnership is benefiting both organizations as well as the Decatur community. During fiscal year 2006, we placed 258 dogs and 128 cats. That's a total of 386 animals whose lives we have touched in a very positive way! We rescued pets not only from the Decatur and Macon County area but from several humane societies and animal control facilities throughout central and southern Illinois. Our vision to establish community outreach programs is becoming a reality. During the past year, we have held obedience training classes, gave presentations to schools and other organizations, and started a foster program.
