Mountains Humane Societyhe Mountains' Humane Society was formed in 1975 by a group of mountain residents who shared a concern for the welfare of local cats and dogs. Their purpose was to provide humane care for the animals, to seek to return lost pets to their owners, and to seek homes for animals without owners. A phone service was begun. The progress of the organization has been controlled by the availability of funding. Mr K's Pet ShelterJackie McNew and Wilma Lord have been rescuing abused and homeless animals for as long as they can recall. They opened their first shelter in the Houston "Heights" area in 1999 and named it "Mr K's Halfway House for Hound". Mr. K's is named for one of the first stray dogs they brought in. While at Kroger on Airline Drive. Wilma noticed a stray dog that was mangy and was being kicked around. Wilma picked up the abused dog and brought him home and nursed him back to health. The mangy dog, given the name of Mr. K, is now healthy, full of life and is the namesake for the pet shelter. Mr K's now provides shelter for more than 120 dogs and cats. All animals are either spayed or neutered and are available for adoption. To operate throughout the year, Mr. K's sole supports depends on donations from individuals or businesses and adoption fees. MSIR - Midwest Shiba Inu RescueMidwest Shiba Inu Rescue (MSIR) is a non-profit, all-volunteer corporation. MSIR seeks out, fosters, and places homeless Shiba Inu dogs into carefully screened, lifelong, and nurturing homes. In addition to rescue, MSIR volunteers provide medical care and/or rehabilitation for foster dogs and then attempt to match them with appropriate, permanent homes. MSIR also educates the public about the Shiba Inu breed, the need for dog rescue and dog training, and the importance of spaying/neutering pets to prevent overpopulation. One of MSIR's goals is to acquire funding to support operations. MSIR is based in Chicago, and currently serves parts of the Midwest.
