The Humane Society of Monroe County (HSMC) was founded in 1958 by Monroe County residents who were concerned for the welfare of the companion animals in our community. For approximately 30 years, the society has operated a shelter where stray, abandoned or surrendered animals receive care – food, shelter, medical attention and love – until they can be placed in a permanent home. The society also promotes the humane treatment of animals through education; attempts to re-unite lost animals with their owners, and promote spaying or neutering of pets to control the population of unwanted animals.

The Mission of the Humane Society of Morgan County (HSMC) is the extension of education to pet owners in humane treatment of animals, increasing pet adoptions, and to maintain an animal shelter which is dedicated to providing humane care and treatment to animals in our care.
Outside help from SPCA and members of various humane societies helped form HSMC which was founded in 1977. HSMC is a nonprofit organization and only through the support of volunteers and donations from our community are we able to improve the quality of life for our animals.
Other significant programs implemented and managed by HSMC include:
Adoptions and Fostering, Subsidized Spay/Neuter Program, and Lost and Found Assistance.

We are the only shelter in the community and we take in stray and unwanted animals as well as animals impounded by the county dog warden. Adopting a friend
Our goal is to place pets in their forever homes. If you are interested in applying to adopt a pet, please contact us by email to obtain an adoption application and one can be emailed or faxed to you. Applications are reviewed and decisions are made within 24 hours. This gives the shelter staff time to check references and also gives the potential adopter time to consider the idea of having a new family member.
Adoption Costs include first shots, de-worming, and sometimes spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations:
Cats - $75
Dogs - $85
