The Avery County Humane Society, organized in 1978 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The Humane Society built an animal shelter in 1988 to help the many lost and unwanted cats and dogs in the county. Along with the animal shelter, the Humane society has a year round spay/neuter program, an educational program, and does cruelty investigations.

Healing Hearts Small Animal Rescue, Inc. became incorporated on December 1, 2004. We are now in the process of filling for our non-profit status.
We help to place small animals into loving and forever homes. We strive to find the best homes for our pets based on the pets needs, personality and previous history. We foster small mammals (hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, gerbils, birds, etc.), dogs under 15lbs and small exotics. Dogs and other pets will be spayed/neutered, up to date on shots and vet checked prior to adoption

The Animal Awareness Society (TAAS) is dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and feral cats in the area through spaying and neutering. We go door to door speaking to people and passing out fliers in an attempt to educate the citizens of the Triad about local animal laws, animal care, the benefits of spaying and neutering and the problems that arise from not spaying and neutering.
The main goal of the Society is to greatly reduce the number of unwanted cats, find homes for adoptable cats, and find caretakers for feral colonies after they have been spayed or neutered. TAAS plans to accomplish this goal by targeting heavy cat populated areas and concentrating our education efforts there.

On July 1, 2005, the Humane Society of Richmond County Animal Shelter celebrated its third birthday. More than 10,000 dogs, cats, and an occasional possum, chicken or rabbit, have made their home at the shelter during the past three years. With the continued support of the City of Rockingham and Richmond County, the shelter has become one of the leading animal care facilities in North Carolina. For the second year, the HSRC Animal Shelter received a 100% inspection rating.

Sabrina's House is a true rescue and not an adoption shelter. We take the very sick and badly injured animals and rehabilitate them. We do rabbits as well as most small "exotic" mammals, birds and wildlife. "Special needs" animals always take priority for admission to our facility.

Cheryl Routh started Happy Hills in 1982 as a boarding and grooming kennel. (boarding and grooming services are still offered). In 1986, she began taking in abandoned and abused animals, and putting them up for adoption. By 1989 the rescue work had grown so much that Happy Hills Animal Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit organization.
Hundreds of dogs and cats, as well as other animals like potbellied pigs, rabbits, etc. have been rescued and adopted through Happy Hills. We are no-kill, and adoptable animals may stay with us weeks, months, even years before they find their forever home. Unfortunately, it is impossible to take in all the animals that need rescuing, and some are sent on to the county pound.
