In 1959, a caring group of volunteers gathered to share a common
and deeply-held concern: a desire to help the thousands of unwanted,
abandoned and mistreated animals of this community.
Their dedication to the welfare of animals led to the creation of the Belleville Area Humane Society.
BAHS depends almost entirely upon the intrest and support of
concerned citizens through donations and membership in the
organization. A Board of Directors is charged with governance of the
organization, including management of policies, finances, physical
plant, operations, personnel, fundraising events, media and public
relations, public outreach activities and all other matters that relate to its purpose and activities.
The main activities of the shelter are carried out by empolyees
(with additional assistance provided by volunteers) under the direction of a manager.
BAHS is a non-profit organization. It's support is derived primarily
from membership fees, donations, bequests, adoption fees and
fundraising activities. Some operating funds are recieved through billed
services to St. Clair Township and the city of Belleville. Grant funds may
also contribute to BAHS operations.

Berea ARF houses, rejuvenates and finds homes for the stray animals of Berea. We have facilities for 8 dogs and 75 cats. We are an extended stay facility and our numbers have grown beyond the breaking point. Many of our animals are in foster care until room opens at the shelter for them. We are seeking to build a larger facility (6,000 sq ft) to replace our 700 sq.ft building, which is donated by the city and sits in the middle of the city service garage construction area. Our shelter is run solely on donations and fundraisers. Animals are only admitted to our facility through the ACO officer or the Berea police, we do not accept unwanted pets.
