Founded in 1911, the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc. is dedicated to helping people and pets increase their quality of life. We operate two shelters, one on the East Shore and one on the West Shore of the Susquehanna River. Together, the two facilities service Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, and northwestern York Counties of Pennsylvania. Most of the animals received each year at our two locations are cats and dogs; however, the Humane Society accepts and cares for all types of animals, contacting third party agencies for assistance when necessary.

The PFCS shelter is a full-service ferret rescue and shelter organization. We currently have one main shelter facility where our adoptable ferrets are cared for. The Forget-Me-Not Ferret Rescue, located near Harrisburg, is run by Tracy Acker. We also have a network of trained foster facilities who also operate under the guidelines of the PFCS to help with special-needs ferrets or when our main shelters are full. Our Director of Shelter Operations, Kym Costanzo, oversees the entire shelter network and manages the administration of the shelter. All adoption and surrender requests are processed by the Director of Shelter Operations and then passed along to the appropriate shelter director. The shelter directors handle adoption screening and surrender intake, as well as the enormous task of caring for the ferrets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We had to stop taking in Ferrets at this time due to high medical bills. Our bill needs to be paid off with our vet before we can resume taking in ferrets. We do not expect to have any ferrets for adoption until well into 2008 and for our medical bills are still over $3000.00

We opened in 2002 to help the pets that are often considered "disposable" in today's society. These pets; rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats, reptiles, turtles, birds, hedgehogs, ferrets, chinchillas, sugar gliders, degus, etc. have as much of a right to a second chance as do all the cats and dogs out there. **any dogs or cats listed on our site are strays we have personally found and are trying to find homes for**
