The answer is a combination of personnel and city supervision. The Rocky Mount Animal Shelter is a division of the Police Department but the Animal Control/Shelter personnel are civilian. Our policy is to hold dogs and cats for seven days when picked up stray or at large instead of the three days required by state law. We also do not have a set time or day of week for euthanization. We pride ourselves on the fact that we only put down when we have to. Unfortunately however it is still way to often. We receive full support from our supervisors as long as we remain fiscally responsible.

The Edgecombe-Nash Humane Society is a non-profit organization of volunteers who rescue stray and abused animals in Nash and Edgecombe counties. We do not euthanize our rescued pets. Our rescued pets are kept in foster homes, at boarding facilities, since we do not have our own facilities.
