PAWS (Preservation of Animal Welfare and Safety) is a regional, no-kill, animal-rescue group, established in 1979, dedicated to saving lives and preventing suffering by implementing the no-kill philosophy through aggressive spay/neuter programs for owned and unowned animals; by rescuing, fostering, and seeking permanent homes for endangered dogs and cats; and by raising awareness of the plight of homeless animals. We seek a time when there are no homeless animals, when every companion animal can be guaranteed a loving place to live. PAWS is an all-volunteer, 501c3 (not for profit) organization that receives no government funding and relies on donations from people

PAWS primary mission is to eliminate the suffering caused by the pet over-population tragedy by providing a low cost spay/neuter program. Our adoption animals result from unwanted litters, strays, and owner surrenders. PAWS tries to find the best match for both the new owner and the pet. To accomplish this we require all pets in the household be spayed/neutered and that the pets be kept indoors. We also check veterinary records for existing pets, references, and the landlord's pet policy. All of our pets are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.

The PSPCA is a “low kill shelter. Each week all PSPCA satellite shelters transfer orphaned animals to our Philadelphia Headquarters where the demand is greater. We also work closely with no-kill shelters in our area and breed placement orginizations. This has resulted in a greatly reduced euthanasia rate, however animals still may need to be euthanized should the numbers surrendered outstrip our ability to adopt out and transfer to other shelters. Our transfer program allows each branch shelter the opportunity to offer more personal care for the many orphaned, sick and injured animals we receive. The PSPCA makes every effort to find homes for animals that are healthy and free of behavior problems. Many of the sick and injured animals we receive are provided with medical care (and/or behavioral treatment) and rehabilitated. Animals are euthanized if they are to sick to rehabilitate or to aggressive to adopt into a new home.

At the PSPCA, we believe proper pet care should be accessible and affordable for everyone. So we offer many low-cost and free services to animal lovers throughout the state. How? Through the generous and continued support of our friends and donors, whose help we appreciate tremendously. Without you, we'd be unable to provide many of our services and programs. A simple "thank you" would be an ineloquent understatement of our gratitude, but we'll say it anyway: thank you!

The Pet Adoption League is a no-kill non-profit animal shelter founded in 1991 to aid unwanted, neglected, and/or abandoned pets in Westmoreland and Fayette counties. Until new homes can be found PAL provides shelter, food, and veterinary care (including spaying and neutering) to more than 500 needy animals yearly, with No Time Limit on their length of stay at our shelter.
We are one of the few shelters in the area that is all volunteer. No one is paid a salary in our organization, so you know that your contributions are going directly to the animals. Despite our small operating budget we manage to care for and to place hundreds of animals year after year.
