Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is an all-volunteer non-profit humane society devoted to the prevention of animal suffering. CAAWS has been serving the people and animals of Baton Rouge since 1979 by placing cats and dogs in loving homes and educating the public about responsible pet ownership.
CAAWS is not a shelter, but an adoption agency, which places animals in foster homes until they are adopted. In this way we try to prepare the animals for the experience of living in a home environment. We are a no-kill humane society.
We also provide a service to the public by allowing people with unwanted animals to put their pets up for adoption at our facility. Potential adopters of both foster and public animals are thoroughly screened and interviewed before being allowed to adopt.

We are a very small group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to finding homes for neglected, abused and unwanted chihuahuas. We also will take in, on occassion, other small dogs. We do not have a "shelter" and the dogs are fostered in homes along with our families and our own fur children. All of our dogs are fully vetted. All dogs will be spayed or neutered. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!! Any medical conditions will have been cared for. We will try our best to adopt out healthy dogs, matching the "right" dog to the "right" family

We are a non-profit animal welfare agency with a no-kill goal. No-kill means to us that we will euthanize no healthy, adoptable animal. We will strive tirelessly to achieve this goal and we will not be happy with less. " To Communicate, to Educate & to Motivate" This is how we will achieve our goal. As much as we wish to be an agency that does not have to euthanize healthy adoptable animals at this time it is impossible. In order to be a no-kill facility an agency must limit the number of animals admitted. Once full, animals are turned away. We feel it is important to never turn an animal away. Doing so would ensure they would be dumped in the woods to starve or worse. Here with us they will be assured a safe and most importantly a loving place if even for a short time. Currently we are housing all animals in what will be our adoption building. We received a $15,000 grant for our kennel building and along with the $20,000 we just recieved we will be able to complete the kennel! We really need individuals with carpentry experience, plumbers etc. Any amount of time or advice would be truly appreciated. Foster families can help us save lives. Animals that move into foster care for a short time 2 weeks -a couple of mths free up space in the building for another animal. Please consider this rewarding experience. All costs including food & medical care will be covered by the shelter. Saving a life is easy just call 318-757-CAWS, 318-757-4205 or 601-445-0712 and leave a message. We would like to speak to your club, classroom etc... to spread the word and work of CAWS and promote humane and responsible treatment of animals. Please feel free to call or e-mail. For membership: Single $10 Family $15 Business $100 Mail to: CAWS 1212 First St Ferriday, La 71334 or call and we will send you a brochure and application. Volunteers do not have to be involved with actual animal care if you do not desire as we have many, many things that need to be done.

We take in all sizes of Poodles in need & then place them in the home that is best suited for the poodle according to the poodle's personality & needs and the desires of the prospective 'adoptive' parents. This helps to assure that each poodle finds the right home for a lifetime and is given the love, dignity and respect that he/she deserves. All poodles are up to date on shots, wormed, spayed or neutered, heart worm checked, and groomed before they go to their new home. Our desire is for the dog to become a cherished family member & in return to give his/her family a wonderful & faithful companion/friend for a lifetime. All applicants are carefully screened & must meet certain qualifications before being referred for a poodle. Please remember that a poodle is a breed that has to be groomed, so your budget needs to include this cost every 6 - 8 weeks. The right poodle for you and your family may not be available immediately - so patience is a needed virtue

The Friends of the Jefferson Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization and public charity. Our mission is to assist the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter by implementing programs to provide care for animals too young to be housed at the shelter, adoption programs to decrease the number of animals that must be euthanized by the shelter, and otherwise assisting as advised of needs by the shelter directors and staff. We currently have the following programs in place: 1. Monthly Pet Adoption Days - Animals from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter are brought to offsite locations each month by our volunteers. Many people find a visit to the shelter too stressful, so offsite Pet Adoption Days provide potential adopters an alternative place to see the shelter animals. 2. Volunteers help maintain the Cat Adoption Center, known as The Purr Pad at Jefferson Feed, Pet & Garden Center, which features felines from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. 3. The Kitten Fostering Program - we began this program in April 2001 to give shelter kittens younger than six weeks old a chance to reach adoptable age by being fostered in the homes of volunteers. This minimizes their exposure to disease and provides the care and nurturing they need to become loving companions. 4. Shelter Dog Socialization - This program is brand new and provides shelter dogs with exercise, socialization, and obedience training on weekday afternoons.
