The DeWitt County Animal Shelter was formed in the early 70's after a new law was passed in Illinois that required counties to establish an Animal Control Program. The Shelter was built around 1972 or 1973, as required by this law, and according to state specifications. Dr. Mary Ella Mennenga, DVM, is the Animal Control Administrator, and Tamara McFeeters is the Animal Control Officer. For many years there was no adoption program at the Shelter, so the animals were euthanized when they weren't reclaimed. In January 1991 though, that all changed when the DeWitt County Board passed a new Animal Control Ordinance that allowed animals to be adopted from the Shelter. Since that time, two not-for-profit organizations have helped adopt out animals from the Shelter. The current organization is Second Chance for Pets. The organization donates food, supplies, vaccinations, and vet care when needed for the Shelter animals.

We are a non profit rescue and operate on our own money so donations are very much appreciated. When you adopt from me you are saving two lives. The dog you adopt and the one you are making more room for. All of my dogs are current on shots and you will have to fill out a spay contract before adopting them. All dogs are $75.00. The money goes to help rescue more dogs from being euthanized, shots and spaying.

Genesis Animal Rescue is dedicated to the immediate rescue and follow-up rehabilitation of any animal in need. We are a state-licensed, non-profit 501C-3 group. All incoming animals are given a complete health check upon arrival in their foster home. A thorough temperment test is performed on all domestic animals prior to any and all foster stays or eventual adoption into a forever home. After evaluating individual temperment, the animals then begin the process of healing. Severe abuse and neglect are common among incoming animals. The healing process encompasses both physical as well as psycological healing.
If you are considering adopting a pet from us, please review our entire website before contacting us (EMAIL ONLY PLEASE) Most of your questions/concerns about adoption are answered in full on the adoption info page. Please remember that we are all volunteers and we do our best to respond to you in a timely manner. Your patience is appreciated! We thank you for your interest and wish you the best of luck in your search!

We are a Rescue which means we physically go and save lives. Hope pulls animals on their last day of life from animal control facilities that still use the inhumanne gas chamber to put to death homeless pets. We lobby our goverment to ban the use of such chambers for they are cruel. For anyone who does not understand how a gas chamber works we can tell you that they do not die immediately, they do not die peacefully, they die thrown together with cats, dogs, puppies all trying to escape the chamber and breath. It is much like being suffocated. Please help, write your congressman, write your mayor, be active in this and help us to stop the cruelty.
