The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Northern Virginia is a non-profit, all-volunteer, private organization established by local concerned citizens to rescue domestic animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. We receive all our funding from membership dues, donations, and fundraising events. We are always striving to enlarge our animal rescue operations and expand our services to the community. Our voluntary Board of Directors, committee members, and volunteers are responsible for all SPCA activities. We do not have a shelter facility, and depend on foster parents to care for domestic animals until adoption.

This adoption program is running solely by one person; the animal control officer for 2 rural towns in southwestern Vermont. Rather than burden the local shelter with these town's unclaimed strays which are deemed suitable for placement, I began my own adoption program in 1984. In the past it had been mostly word of mouth advertising and exposure with the result being that sometimes dogs were with me for quite some time before a suitable match could be made with a new home. The dogs and I are all very thankful for the exposure that Petfinder gives these needy pups. Animals are housed in my small kennel and carefully screened as best as can be done in a kennel situation. As a professional dog trainer and competitor I try to get an accurate picture of the dog, it's temperament, trainability and suitablity for a variety of home situations. I believe it is important to represent these dogs as honestly as possible so that the layperson looking for a pet and companion will have the best chance of adopting a buddy, not an unexpected problem. I am always available for follow up counseling and guidance in an effort to assure that both owner and animal are happy and well suited to each other.

The Buddy Foundation of Arlington Heights, Illinois was established by the concerned and caring animal lovers from Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs, based on the necessity for a quality no-kill animal shelter. We are strictly an all volunteer organization with all funding - from adoption fees to our many fundraisers - benefiting the animals in our care. The Buddy Foundation is dedicated to finding good, loving, responsible homes for the dogs/puppies and cats/kittens that we foster. Our goal is to help them become cherished family members and receive the attention and gentle kindness they so deserve. Most of our animals were found strayed or abandoned in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. We are a small shelter with limited resources. Thus, we do not like to take in unwanted pets. Instead, we encourage pet owners to be committed to their pets by providing them with a safe & secure home for their lifetime.

In 1981 Donna Nives, Gloria Scheuer and Pam Fahnestock became increasingly concerned about the growing number of fine dogs that were spending the best part of their lives in dog pounds because the public was not aware that they were available for adoption. As the three women traveled from Greenwich to Stamford to Ridgefield and as far away as the Westchester pounds and Humane Societies, they came to realize that the abandoned and/or unwanted dog population was exploding.
