The Animal Rescue League is a non-profit organization that provides rescue, temporary housing, care and assistance to stray and unwanted animals in our community. We do our best to find loving, caring and responsible Forever Homes for all of the animals in our care. We also attempt to educate our community about responsible pet ownership, the humane treatment of animals, and the importance of spaying/neutering your pets.

The Saskatoon Branch of the provincial SPCA was formed in 1957, using a local veterinarian’s kennel as a shelter facility. In 1962, the City of Saskatoon Pound and the SPCA shared a building in the Engineering Department of the City yards. By 1963, the SPCA was located on 21st Street in a remodeled comfort station. In 1968, the organization was incorporated as the Saskatoon Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, separate from the Saskatchewan SPCA. From 1968 to 1991, the Saskatoon SPCA was located at 302 103rd Street (Sutherland district) in a city-owned building. During this time period, the demand and need for SPCA services and programs steadily increased and the relatively small facility was quickly outgrown.

We are a small group of breeders, fanciers and exhibitors of the Golden Retriever. Recently we began the process of organizing a formal rescue group as there are a great many Golden Retrievers that require our help. In the past we have rescued and placed dogs on an individual basis; however, the need is becoming far greater than the time, funds and ability of so few people. Rescuing dogs consists of many parts. We accept Golden Retrievers directly from owners who don't or can't care for them anymore; we acquire dogs from various pounds where they would otherwise be euthanized because their time at the shelter has run out; we will take dogs that are rescued from puppy mills; and we will take dogs that have simply been dumped.
