Every cat and dog that comes into our shelter has been vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas. They are all spayed or neutered before being adopted. Some need to be groomed and all need a kind voice and a reassuring touch from staff members.

The Humane Society of Durham Region is a registered charity. We investigate complaints of animal cruelty and neglect from Pickering to Newtonville and north to Thorah Island. We are an affiliate of the Ontario S.P.C.A. We house up to 150 cats, 8 dogs and numerous small animals at any given time in our shelter. We euthanize for terminal illness and extreme aggression only. We do not euthanize animals for the length of stay. We are not an animal control. We operate a small food bank for animals out of the shelter. Our animals come to us through our investigations department, through their owners when they can't be looked after anymore and also from other organizations. We receive no government funding. We exist upon donations only. Registered Charity No. 13256 2984 RR0001

CCRT stands for Canadian Chihuahua Rescue and Transport, a network of volunteers working together to rescue, transport, foster and provide necessary veterinary care for homeless, abandoned, neglected, or abused Chihuahuas.
How did CCRT start?
The idea was created by a Canadian who realized the need when in 1996, the Secretary of the Chihuahua Club of America learned of a breeder in Texas who developed Alzheimer's and 'forgot' her 17 Chihuahuas. By the time this was discovered, the Chihuahuas were in pretty bad shape. The breeder's family members gave permission to allow the Chihuahuas to be taken into foster care until permanent homes could be found. A message was posted to a Chihuahua email discussion list and there was immediate response from people who wanted to adopt one or more of these Chihuahuas.
Because of the logistical difficulties, stress and unfavorable conditions of flying animals by commercial airlines, they were frustrated at having good homes inaccessible because of location. In a moment of madness, Pat Weir, a list member in Nanaimo, BC, wondered aloud on the list "if only we could organize a network of volunteers who would foster and drive Chihuahuas to new homes". Within within 24 hours, dozens of volunteers had stepped forward.
In May 1999, we formed the Canadian Chihuahua Rescue and Transport and currently have Regional Coordinators in each Province and have volunteer and adoption applications coming in daily.

Friends of Abandoned Pets (FOAP) is an independent non-profit organization in Ottawa, ON Canada. We are a group of dedicated, caring people who love animals. FOAP is sensitive to the plight of abandoned, homeless cats and dogs in our area, and are prepared to give our time and energy to help them. We are all volunteers. Our reward is to see a frightened, often desperately thin, sometimes injured, homeless cat or dog blossom into a self-confident, happy pet in a loving home. We all help in our own way. Since we do not have a building in which to house animals, they stay in temporary foster homes until a permanent adoptive home is found. FOAP is always in need of caring foster homes, who are willing to provide food, love, and shelter; FOAP pays for veterinarian costs while they are under foster care. Once an animal is adopted, we charge a reasonable fee to help recover some of the veterinarian costs.
