Humane Society of Portage CountyFounded in 1969, the Humane Society of Portage County owns and operates an animal shelter in Bukolt Park, located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The shelter provides food, housing and care for over 2,500 stray, unwanted, sick, or injured animals each year. HSPC is primarily funded through private donations, fundraising activities and adoptions. Outreach for HSPC is based on our foster and volunteer programs. Many nursing mothers are sent into foster care until their kittens or puppies are ready to be adopted. We also use this program for undersocialized animals and old/sickly dogs and cats that would otherwise not find homes. Our volunteers help with the daily chores and activities that keep our animals happy and healthy. Many volunteers walk the dogs and socialize our cats. They also help with general training. Country Animal HavenWe are a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue and shelter, located on eight acres of land just north of Stoughton, Wisconsin. Our mission is to provide a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and a safe haven for animals while they await permanent loving homes. Country Animal Haven was established in September of 2000. Since that time, over 1300 cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and other animals have passed through our doors. Some remain at the shelter in life-long care, but most have found new families and new lives. Country Animal Haven endeavors to be a strong presence in the community, working to increase awareness of animal issues. We strongly advocate spaying and neutering of both feral and pet cats to reduce the overabundance of unwanted kittens and improve the general health of adult cats. We hope for the day when all animals will know what it means to be wanted, loved and cared for. Our main focus is finding good, permanent homes for homeless companion animals through our screening process and humane education. We strive to educate the public on the care and responsibility of a pet through leaflets, newsletters, newspaper articles and our website. We rescue animals from abusive situations and we seek veterinary care for animals who need it. Animals in our care receive vaccinations at the appropriate ages, they are de-wormed, treated for flea and tick infestation if necessary, fed, groomed, exercised, socialized and played with in order to provide them with as good a life as possible while they await a home.
