In 1959, a caring group of volunteers gathered to share a common
and deeply-held concern: a desire to help the thousands of unwanted,
abandoned and mistreated animals of this community.
Their dedication to the welfare of animals led to the creation of the Belleville Area Humane Society.
BAHS depends almost entirely upon the intrest and support of
concerned citizens through donations and membership in the
organization. A Board of Directors is charged with governance of the
organization, including management of policies, finances, physical
plant, operations, personnel, fundraising events, media and public
relations, public outreach activities and all other matters that relate to its purpose and activities.
The main activities of the shelter are carried out by empolyees
(with additional assistance provided by volunteers) under the direction of a manager.
BAHS is a non-profit organization. It's support is derived primarily
from membership fees, donations, bequests, adoption fees and
fundraising activities. Some operating funds are recieved through billed
services to St. Clair Township and the city of Belleville. Grant funds may
also contribute to BAHS operations.

We started Bond County Adopt-A-Pet in June of 1992. Our board members are: Oliver Stowe, DVM, Susan Chandler, Debbie Haughland and Jim and Mary Price. Attorney William Dillow donated all his legal fees and filing fees to help get us started. Thanks to him and our board members, we have saved 2993 animals since we started. In 2004 we successfully placed 106 dogs and 5 cats into loving homes.

The Bond County Humane Society (BCHS) exists to provide temporary sanctuary for unwanted, lost and neglected animals for ultimate placement in loving and responsible homes. BCHS is a nonprofit charitable organization committed to promote animal welfare through education and to actively encourage pet population reduction. We are dedicated to creating, in Bond County, an
environment that enhances awareness of homeless animals and support for the humane treatment of these animals.
BCHS does not receive funding assistance from the city, county, state or any other organization. BCHS is totally dependent on membership dues, donations, grants and fundraisers to help the animals.

We are very excited to announce that donations are now tax deductable!!!!
We are a private rescue organizion. We do not receive any funding so adoption fees and donations are a critical part of keeping our adoption program active. The majority of our adoptable animals are puppies/dogs that have ran out of time at other shelters, abandoned litters of puppies, puppy mill rescues and surrendered animals. We also rescue horses/ponies from abusive homes, seizure by local officials and auctions. These horses are given proper health care and given both the physical and mental rehabilitation needed in order for them to be adoptable .
