Mission Statement for the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa:
"Our goals are to provide a safe, clean and caring environment for pets in need, to assure that only healthy, altered pets are returned to the community, and to educate the public about the importance of proper pet care and pet population control."
The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa is a LIMITED ADMISSION shelter. We do not euthanize to make room for animals. Animals are put on a waiting list until space becomes available.

Milford Humane Society
The Milford Humane Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill shelter for stray and abandoned cats. First organized in September 1990 to fill a need in the community, we help to care and find homes for the ever-increasing number of homeless cats that exist in the local area.

Town of Milford Animal Control
The Milford Animal Control Department picks up stray dogs and holds them for ten days to allow the owners time to locate their lost pet. After the ten day holding period any unclaimed dogs are adopted out to new homes. We strive to place dogs in homes that will provide proper shelter, good veterinary care, and the dogs must be treated in a humane & appropriate manner.

We are a multifaceted Animal Control Agency. First we are a law enforcement agency. We enforce all laws pertaining to animals. We pick up and impound any roaming dogs. We respond to over 150 animal complaints a month. We have an immaculately clean facility and very wholesome environment so that the animals can thrive and with a little love, attention, and training be adopted to suitable homes.
We also have a very good educational program for area schools, and a very successful Pet Therapy program for the area convalescent homes.
We have a wonderful volunteer program geared toward parent-child interaction. Our volunteers do fund raisers, care for the animals and plant flowers, etc. to make the Shelter more inviting. They also run a pet food bank that supplies pet food to indigent people who would otherwise have to give up their beloved pet for lack of money to feed them.
Last year, we began a feral cat project. We as a community, trap, inoculate, and alter, and release them back to the area so that we may eventually end the feral cat colonies plaguing our City.

Dogs and cats are available for adoption at the Caroline County Animal Shelter. Only Caroline County residents or adjoining County residents (Hanover, King George, Essex, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King and Queen and King William) are able to adopt non-sterilized animals. By state law, anyone who adopts a dog or cat must have his or her new pet sterilized. Any Virginia citizen may adopt animals that have already been sterilized.
