SPCA of Tampa BayThe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has served as every Tampa Bay pet owner's safety net for 65 years. According to an article in the St. Petersburg Times (2000) more than 77,000 dogs and cats are turned over to shelters in Hillsborough and pinellas counties annually. Of those dogs that are admitted to shelters, almost 25 percent are purebred. The SPCA provides services to between 16,000 and 18,000 homeless and abandoned animals every year. The organization focuses mainly on offering low-cost spay/neuter programs and various adoption locations to reach this goal.
