Every year thousands of cats and kittens in Southern Oregon are abandoned and left to fend for themselves. In many cases CATS is able to step in and rescue these feline friends from cruel and unloving life on the street. Our rescue stories range from cats found in garbage dumpsters, to litters of kittens found on remote country roadsides.
We at Committed Alliance to Strays are determined to do something about this problem. We think cats should be in homes, not alleys, vacant lots, or dumpsters. Our program rescues homeless and abandoned cats, gives them special care, including medical check-ups, testing, vaccinations, behavioral checks, and lots of love. Life in our shelter offers cats a chance to rest and become reacquainted with loving humans. Our volunteers spend hours with these cats until they are adopted into a loving home.
As part of our goal to help this situation, no cat leaves our shelter until it has been spayed or neutered. We encourage everyone to have their animals spayed or neutered. All of our cats are also tested for Feline AIDS (FIV) and Feline Leukemia (FeLV), diseases which are preventable, but contagious and fatal once contracted.

It all started because of an injured mule which could not 'legally' be destroyed because it was unclaimed by the owner. Seven concerned West End residents joined together to care for the mule, as it seems that no one else cared.
Thus, was started the Umatilla County Humane Society. Its organization and non-profit status were supervised by Gene Burgess, then Executive Secretary of the Oregon Humane Society in Portland. Incorporation papers were issued, and the organization registered as a federal and state 501(c)(3) humane non-profit corporation in 1975.
Over the years, through different administrations and several name changes including Stokes Landing Humane Society and, most recently, Pioneer Humane Society, the organization has never waivered from its main goal to prevent cruelty to animals. Administrative reorganization in 2002 has resulted in an expanded mission which now includes: education to promote responsible pet ownership, reduction of unwanted animals through on-going spay/neuter programs, adoption services for lost and abandoned animals, plus plans to construct a new shelter to serve the City of Pendleton as well as the eastern portion of Umatilla County.
