The animals in our program were scheduled to be euthanized prior to coming to foster care. Pets in our program stay in foster care until their forever home finds them. However long that takes. We do not euthanize healthy adoptable animals to make room for more.

Pender County Animal Control is a small rural shelter that is located in a big county. Pender Co. is 900 sq. miles of country roads and beaches, stretching east from Topsail Island to west of HWY 421 and south from the New Hanover county line to north at the Onslow and Duplin county lines.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The shelter is located in Burgaw, NC. about 25 miles north of Wilmington, NC. We are a fiscally challenged county shelter. This is the dog pound.
While we are NOT a no-kill facility, we do work closely with a small group of dedicated volunteers to take as many adoptable pets from this shelter as possible and place them in foster care

The Department of Animal Control operates under North Carolina State Laws and the Local Government Ordinance. We investigate dog bites, quarantine animals if required or have them sent to the state laboratory for testing. We control rabies by giving out rabies verification cards and verifying rabies inoculations, and by controlling the stray animal population. Our department also investigates animal cruelty cases and pursues them in court if necessary. Officers handle sick and distressed animals. Our department controls animal overpopulation and strays are picked up and taken to our shelter. They are provided with food, water and warm shelter. Most of the animals in our shelter have never had food on a daily basis, nor the love and attention, they deserve. Our department has a high rate of adoptions and we also reunite lost pets with their owners. NEUTER/SPAY IS THE ONLY WAY!!!!

The Humane Society in Eastern North Carolina was established over 20 years ago to protect animals from cruelty and abuse. It was designed not only to serve as a safe haven for homeless and neglected pets but also to act as a resource and service to the community of Pitt County. By educating the public about issues pertaining to animals, we feel that we can work towards the elimination of over breeding of dogs and cats and teach owners how to be responsible pet owners. At the same time, we hope to facilitate adoption of pets to good homes so that we can allow more of the unwanted pets to enter our gates. In welfare cases, we provide financial support to help for legal injections, medications, accidents and, when monies permit, spaying and neutering of pets.
