The ACL's mission is...
Protecting animals from improper use, abuse, neglect, inhumane treatment and health hazards.
Educating the public about responsible pet ownership.
Sheltering lost, abandoned and unwanted animals.
Preventing the birth of unwanted animals.
Reuniting lost pets and their families.
Adopting animals into loving and responsible homes.
Lovingly caring for the pets that reside in our animal shelter.
This mission is accomplished through the dedication and energy of our small shelter staff, board of directors, and legion of faithful volunteers. The Animal Care League accepts dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, which we care for until we find responsible new owners. These animals have either been surrendered by their owners who can no longer keep them or have been transferred from other animal control facilities. Our ability to accept animals is limited to the space we have available. We euthanize animals only in cases of irremediable health problems or other grave circumstances. We have had an early spay/neuter program in place since 1994; this allows us to spay or neuter each animal we offer for adoption, one of our contributions to ending the horrible cycle of pet overpopulation.
We rely entirely on membership dues, donations, and proceeds from our fundraising projects to finance our mission

Cat Overpopulation Planned Endeavor is a 501c3 non profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of stray and feral cats through sterilization and education. C.O.P.E. would like to see a day when no more cats are living homeless and forgotten on the streets. Until that day arrives, however, we are dedicated to spaying and neutering as many cats as we can, while providing care for colonies of feral cats and removing non-feral strays from the streets and placing them into our adoption program whenever possible.

Animal Welfare League was founded in 1935 to stop the suffering of animals that seemed common place in Chicagoland. Our founding shelter, located at 6224 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, still exists today as the only humane society on the south side of Chicago. Our Wabash shelter operates in an economically depressed area and provides valuable services to residents in the area such as shelter and care to homeless and needy animals, low cost clinic services to pet owners on a limited income and no-charge monthly pet food distribution.

Please Note: Adoptions are only handled at this location.
Everyday the Animal Welfare League saves animals lives and works to improve the way they are treated and regarded by society. In the Chicagoland area, we help all animals through our adoption programs, our low cost clinic services, our local cruelty investigations, and our public education programs. Locally we work to improve municipal, city and state laws and regulations regarding the treatment of animals and operate the states largest non-profit animal shelter program. We have made progress since our beginning in 1935, but much more work needs to be done. The Animal Welfare League is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that receives no city, state or federal funding and relies on private donations to continue with its mission of helping all animals.
