ASAP reached our initial goal of completely eliminating unnecessary euthanasia at the San Luis Obispo County, California Animal Shelter. From 2001, when thousands of animals lost their lives, to 2002 when San Luis Obispo County had the fourth best save rate in the entire country to 2004 when euthanasia for space was zero! That was quite an accomplishment. However, we are finding it terrifically difficult to maintain a zero euthanasia rate. The wonderful dogs and cats we list on Petfinder are animals that were going to be surrendered to the pound, but the owners are giving us a short time to try to find a new home under our No Place Like Home program.

We are a 501c(3) non-profit organization run completly by volunteers. Our goal is to stop the killing and suffering of animals. We are reducing pet overpopulation by helping people to spay and neuter identify (so lost animals can find their way home), train (so people don't give up their animals), and adopt rather than breed (so homeless animals can have a home). Our accomplishments include launching the city's first mobile spay/neuter van that travels to low income areas, funding and implementing a spay/neuter voucher program to encourage and make it affordable, and producing and airing t.v. ads on the importance of spay/neuter. Our most recent project is to fund and open a veterinary clinic that will accept all animals, regardless of ability to pay. All donations are used directly for the animals, and are fully tax deductible. We have no staff, no employees, and no salaries or administrative expenses.
