Pioneer Humane SocietyIt all started because of an injured mule which could not 'legally' be destroyed because it was unclaimed by the owner. Seven concerned West End residents joined together to care for the mule, as it seems that no one else cared. Thus, was started the Umatilla County Humane Society. Its organization and non-profit status were supervised by Gene Burgess, then Executive Secretary of the Oregon Humane Society in Portland. Incorporation papers were issued, and the organization registered as a federal and state 501(c)(3) humane non-profit corporation in 1975. Over the years, through different administrations and several name changes including Stokes Landing Humane Society and, most recently, Pioneer Humane Society, the organization has never waivered from its main goal to prevent cruelty to animals.
