The mission of the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is to further the interests and improve the lives of dogs and cats by educating and influencing public opinion in respect to the care, treatment and welfare of animals; to provide shelter, food and medical care for those dogs and cats surrendered to us for adoption and to find appropriate homes for them; to offer informational programs in the community's elementary schools; to operate a low cost spay and neuter clinic offered to the public; and to take an active part in the enforcement of those laws of the State of California enacted for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

A-PET is strictly a no-kill, rescue shelter! Once an animal comes through our doors, it stays with us until an appropriate home is found for that animal. A-PET boasts over 270 successful adoptions! We never “return or release an animal to any Animal Control Facility nor do we ever turn an animal over to any other organization that participates in euthanasia. A-PET accepts animals on a space available basis giving priority to the rescue and care of lost, injured, abandoned and/or stray animals from Edwards Animal Control as well as PCS Surrenders. PCS surrenders are those animals that come from military members who have Deployment or PCS Orders and are unable to continue properly caring for their pet(s) due to the Air Force Mission.
