The Animal Shelter Assistance Program does not have a shelter or building. Phone calls and emails are handled by several volunteers. We do respond to every inquiry, but due to the lack of paid staff, responses may take some time depending upon the availability of our volunteers.

Animal Talk opened its pet shop doors in 1990 and rescue work for companion animals began. The rescue obtained its 501C3 March 1, 2000. While the rescue focus has been primarily with cats and kittens, rescue of any abused, abandoned or neglected companion animals is undertaken provided there is space available. In past years dogs, puppies, and even iguanas have been rescued, treated and cared for until suitable new caretakers have been found. After eleven years of work, Animal Talk Rescue was approved as a 501C3 Non Profit. About the "Rescue"! This past year the number of cats or kittens taken in has sharply increased. In 1999 229 animals were taken in by the rescue, this figure doubled in 2000. In 2004 we placed 630 adoptions.

Animal Trustees of Alleghany, Inc.'s main purpose is to provide good homes, to responsible pet owners, for the animals brought into the Alleghany Animal Shelter in Twin Oaks, Sparta, N.C., and to encourage spay/neutering of these pets and the pets in the county. We provide care of the sick and injured animals, vaccinations, worming, food, disinfectants, litter, cages, and issue a $35.00-spay/neuter certificate for each animal adopted. Financial assistance is offered to those that cannot afford to spay /neuter their pets in the county. We work with other animal welfare groups that adopt particular breeds by spay/neutering, vaccinating, and transferring the pets to these groups. Pictures are taken of the pets, posters made and circulated throughout this and other counties to facilitate the adoptions. Radio coverage also describes the pets available at the shelter. Educational material is circulated to encourage people to spay/neuter their pets in order to stop the amount of animals brought into the shelter that are euthanized. Animal Trustees of Alleghany, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization.

AWAL was founded to support, educate, promote and develop positive humane treatment of animals. We as a group believe many people would help animals if the resources were more readily available. AWAL provides education for responsible pet care. AWAL also provides specially designed equipment on a limited basis for the humane trapping and housing of feral cats. AWAL has a limited adoption/foster care network.
