We are often asked at Bide Awhile what makes us different from other shelters and we believe our difference lies in our heart and in our vision. At the very heart of Bide Awhile is the respect we have for our animal friends, and the value we put on our relationships with them. We believe that both human and animal lives are enhanced when they come together and because of this, we work hard to place animals in loving home environments. Because we believe in creating a humane community, we strive to educate the public about many topics, including pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering, and other animal issues.

Every year our hospitals receive dozens of less fortunate kittens, cats, puppies and dogs who are either dropped off by compassionate citizens or abandoned at our doorsteps. Our caring staff take these orphans in and treat and nurture them until they can be adopted out to a loving home.

The boundary SPCA, like all branches of the BC SPCA, is a non-profit organization. Our revenues are derived in part by proceeds from the various fundraising events that we hold or that are held on our behalf. The remainder is collected in the form of cash and material donations from generous members of our community.

The Municipal shelter is funded by the City of Brampton and is responsible for by-law enforcement and housing of stray animals. We also accept owned animals for adoption. We assist the public with wildlife issues to help them live harmoniously with urban wildlife. Humane Societies are responsible for animal cruelty and also helping animals that are homeless or in need of help. They are funded by donations. The Peel humane Society does not have a shelter in Brampton.
The Animal Shelter does not have a specific adoption period. If the animal placed for adoption remains healthy, happy and friendly it remains in our adoption wing. The Animal Shelter does not euthanize to make room for other animals.

The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located.
